NORTHERN INDIANA CHAPTER |
The Northern Indiana Chapter of Project 2019 was formed and established in order
to provide a more efficient pre -college training program, in the area of Engineering
Technology and Biomedical Technology. It is our plan to increase the numbers
of ethnic minorities who are involved in Bio-Medical research. Currently
there is a critical shortage of minorities. "As a result of this, critical
insights and perspectives are lacking in the development implementation and
evaluation of a growing and important field.”
In order to meet the needs of the gross shortage of diverse populations in these
professions Project 2019 has decided to widen the playing fields by including
Special Populations. Each student is required to have a transition plan on file
prior to enrolling into Project 2019. This transition plan must consist of advancing
from high school to college in Engineering Technology or Biomedical Technology.
The student must simultaneously be enrolled in the Pre-college program during
his or her junior or senior year in high school. Each student will be assigned
a mentor upon enrolling in the program. There will be four stations outlined
in the surrounding Northern part of Indiana. Each station will be called Timbuktu
Stations, station number 1,2, 3, & 4. The students will be required to create
a personal profile of him or her, outlining their accomplishments. The students
work with their mentors in a shadowing project for eight weeks, in order to
create a portfolio and power point presentation. These internships will be conducted
in the students’ perspective areas of concentration. Successful participating
students will also receive a stipend at the completion of the project. It is
the Project’s intention to address one other area of minority shortage,
and that is in the Teacher shortage of Early Childhood Development. Future plans
are being made to also become a Teacher training site for Early Childhood Development
and Family Life.
